The real Dracula was Prince Vlad Tepes III Dracula, or Vlad the Impaler for short. “Dracula” meant he belonged to the Order of the Dragon, a Catholic chivalric society supposedly started to do good deeds. After his father was tortured and murdered, young Vlad went on a rampage seeking revenge. He’d invite people from his revenge list to attend feasts, and as soon as all were seated, soldiers waiting beneath the floor impaled them with a sharp wooden spear. He hated homeless persons and beggars most of all, and likewise called them to a banquet, impaling them, too, before the first bite. Vlad also thought it clever to leave a jewel in the middle of the road. If anyone came by and put the gem in their pocket—impalement. He believed he was a social genius, instilling the virtues of hard work and honesty in his people. Vlad got a reputation for drinking the blood of his victims, but it was actually huge quantities of red wine that he drank, which helped him find the fortitude to personally skewer an estimated thirty thousand. In the end, Vlad proved mortal, dying in battle in 1476. The victorious Turkish sultan who defeated him put his head in a jar of honey and took it out occasionally to display, propped up on a stick like a gooey candied gourd. Upon his death, Chris tians hailed Vlad as a hero because he remained faithful to the Church, if not its ideals.
